Bahala Ka: It's up to YOU!!

In researching the Tagalog language, you will find that a common phrase said in the Philippines is "BAHALA KA!" .  .  .  translation: It's up to you!

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about going on a mission.  I always pictured it happening in my mind: I would serve a mission, then I would come home; finish my Masters degree, and marry "prince charming".  I have only lived a few short years on this earth, but it hasn't taken me long to understand that life never ends up how you expect, but nevertheless, It's up to You to write your story.

You are the one that decides to be happy, and to make your life all that you expect it to be. (Hence the title of this Blog).  Life will have have twists and turns, and lead you on roads you never thought were in front of you, but if you stay true to who you are and hold on to what you believe you'll end up an even better person headed in a more rewarding direction.

Opening my Mission call on May 10th was the most surreal experience I've had in a long time.  I may have dreamed about going on a mission as a little girl, but I never dreamed about where I'd be sent.  Spanish speaking; sure that makes sense, state side; yeah I could see that too. "Bagio Philippines, speaking Tagalog".....never saw that one coming.  That was obvious to everyone as I read my call aloud "Bag-ee-oh Philippines, speaking Tag-a-log" Yeah, I didn't even know where the Philippines was on a map, let alone how to say it correctly. Now I do.  I could tell you how many islands make up the Philippines, how many different languages are spoken there.  I could tell you what the people look like, common traditions, and what types of food are eaten.

A month ago, I barely knew this little Island existed, but God was well aware of it, along with the many people there who need Him, and the Gospel. What I do know now, without a doubt, is that the Lord wants me there.  I have felt that I am supposed to be there, and I have had countless experiences since starting my mission paperwork that have reassured me that there is no greater thing I could be doing right now, than serving the Lord in the Philippines.

Funny how I can go my entire life shaping my character, figuring out my strengths and weaknesses.  Discovering my likes and dislikes, and working on figuring out who I am.  And Heavenly Father already knows that.  When called upon to assign me to a mission, he knew exactly where I should be sent.  I never dreamed of going to the Philippines, but now that I've been called to that area,  I can't imagine going anywhere else.  I guess that's the difference between God seeing the big picture, and me only capturing a small part.

I can't wait to live the next 18 months of my life.  I may not know the people of Baguio, Philippines, but I already feel an overwhelming love for them.  I can't wait to share my testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  I love my Heavenly Father, and whenever I need him, he is always there.  The Atonement is real. I have felt the Saviors arms around me, carrying me, as I've been through my small struggles.  I know that when we make a mistake, we can be forgiven.  I know that if we keep the commandments and do all the Savior has asked us to do, that only then can we find true happiness.  Happiness that lasts much longer than a simple pleasure or any material thing.  Agency is what this life is about; and "It's up to You" to decide what path your next footsteps will be on. So...Bahala Ka!!
